2001 Pulitzer Prize winner for Public Service

The most prestigious of the Pulitzers, the gold medal, was awarded to The Oregonian for its "detailed and unflinching examination of the systematic problems with the U.S. Immigration and Naturalization Service." The extensive coverage spoke for people outside of the courts and Constitution, documenting harsh treatment of foreign nationals and other widespread abuses. The series prompted various reforms within the INS.

The INS coverage, including the six-part series, Liberty's Heavy Hand, was reported and written by Richard Read, Brent Walth, Julie Sullivan and Kim Christensen. The editorials were written by Rick Attig, associate editor. The coverage was edited by Amanda Bennett and Jack Hart, managing editors. Photographers were Michael Lloyd, Montoya Nakamura, Roger Jensen and Kathryn Osler. Researchers were Gail Hulden, Lynne Palombo and Lovelle Svart.

While we are incredibly proud of the people whose journalistic skill went into this series, we are even more proud of the sources and their courage.
