2001 Pulitzer Prize for Feature Writing

Tom Hallman, Jr. won the Pulitzer Prize for feature writing in his "poignant profile of a disfigured 14-year-old boy" and the challenges he continues to face to this day - a boy we know as Sam Lightner. It's an inspirational story about unconditional love and courage.

This Pulitzer is awarded "for a distinguished example of feature writing giving prime consideration to high literary quality and originality."

The Oregonian is proud of writer Tom Hallman, Jr. and photographer Benjamin Brink for their talented, heart-felt reporting. We are grateful to Sam Lightner, his family and his  healthcare providers for sharing their insight and understanding with our readers.
