Internship Programs

The Oregonian currently offers two newsroom internship programs. We recruit nationally for our summer internship program. Our academic internship program is limited to students who attend one of Oregon's three major public universities.

Both programs are highly competitive. We seek self-motivated candidates who exhibit intelligence, passion, creativity, integrity and a commitment to a career in journalism.

Summer Internships
The Oregonian's summer internship is a 10-week program open to student reporters, copy editors, photographers, graphic artists, page designers and new media specialists. It is intended for students who have completed their junior or senior year of college, though strong applications from sophomores and graduate students will be considered.

Successful applicants typically have already done one or more internships at a daily newspaper. Interns are paid a stipend in order to defray the cost of living in the metro area, but they are responsible for their own housing and relocation costs.

How to Apply: Submit a cover letter, resume, 500-word autobiographical essay and three references. Reporting candidates should include six to eight work samples. Photographers, designers, graphic artists and new media applicants should include a CD portfolio with up to 20 work samples. Please include all materials in a letter size file folder with your name on the tab. Please do not staple or clip materials. Deadline: Postmarked by Dec. 31, 2009. Address to: The Oregonian Newsroom, 1320 SW Broadway, Portland, OR 97201. Attention: Summer Internship Program 2009. We do not accept materials via e-mail.  Note: Program subject to change pending fall budget review.

Academic Internships
The Oregonian works with Oregon's three major public universities to provide students with a unique opportunity to gain valuable professional experience during the regular academic year.

The newspaper earmarks one slot each fall, winter and spring quarter for a student from the University of Oregon, Oregon State University or Portland State University to do an internship in the main newsroom or one of the paper's suburban bureaus. Students earn academic credit while working for about 11 weeks as a page designer, copy editor, photographer, reporter or new media specialist.

The program generally is directed at students in their junior or senior years. Students enrolled in a graduate program also are eligible. Successful applicants typically have already done one or more internships at a daily newspaper and have a strong academic background. Interns are paid $10 per hour to help defray the cost of living in the metro area, but are responsible for their own housing and relocation costs.

How to apply: Submit a cover letter, resume, current transcript and a one-page statement on career plans and what you hope to gain from the internship. Reporting candidates should include six to eight work samples. Photographers, designers, graphic artists and new media applicants should include a CD portfolio with up to 20 work samples. Please include all materials in a letter size file folder with your name on the tab. Please do not staple or clip materials. See below for specific submission instructions for your school:
