Sharing Your News

Generally speaking, the newsroom is organized by reporting teams rather than by sections of the newspaper. Senior editors make sure the right team covers the right news in the right way. If you are uncertain about which team should cover a story, call the coordinating desk, 503-221-8100, and a news aide will forward your call to the proper team.

Unless otherwise indicated, all submissions - calendar items, press releases and queries - should be addressed to the appropriate editor in care of The Oregonian, 1320 SW Broadway, Portland, OR 97201, or emailed to newsroom@news.oregonian.com.

To help ensure that your news reaches the right editor quickly, refer to the list of news teams here or go to Contact the News Teams for a list of editors and news staff.

Breaking News

7 a.m. to 11 p.m. weekdays: 503-294-5055
Weekends: 503-294-5055
fax: 503-294-5059

Breaking news is immediate, urgent and happening now. For example, someone sets a fire in your neighborhood schoolyard. A plane crashes in the field next door. These types of events are breaking news - often "eyewitness reports" - vs. events that are predicted or planned. The newspaper staff hopes that you will call the newsroom when you witness a breaking news story: 503-294-5055.
We depend on our citizen sources. You are our eyes and ears beyond the newsroom.

Deadlines

In a hectic newsroom, there is often little time for discussing stories by telephone. Typed press releases and/or emails are always appreciated. The general deadline for press release submission is two weeks in advance of desired publication date.

Specific deadlines are printed at the end of calendars and some features. Keep these dates handy when preparing news releases. By giving The Oregonian the necessary advance notice, you give your news the best chance of being printed.
